The cards should be laid out flat, in a square formation. The rest of the cards go to the center of the table and become the stockpile.

Now it’s time for the first player to make their move. It involves taking a card from either your hand or the stockpile. You can then choose whether to discard it or replace one of your cards with it.

Once a card has been discarded, it becomes “activated.” What I mean by this is that each card has a different rule, score, or action required. Only after a card has been discarded does this come into play.

Once any card has been discarded, it also means that you can discard any other cards from either your or your opponent’s hand.

If you discard one of your opponent’s cards, presuming you’ve correctly guessed, you can give them one, leaving you with three cards.

Only once you’re convinced you have the lowest-scoring hand at the table can you call out, “Cambio!” You’re now to sit back from the game until the end.

Once the game ends, if you are the lowest-scoring player, you score “0”; however, if you guessed wrong, you’re given 25 points.

At the end of the game, all points are added together, and more rounds are played. Play until one person reaches 100 points, or set several rounds to play.

The person with the least points at the end of all rounds is the winner.

Card Rules

As I mentioned previously, once activated, each card holds a specific action, requirement, or score. These are as follows:

• Joker: 0 Points
• Ace: 1 Point
• Numbers 2 to 6: Face Value
• 7 and 8: Take a look at one card from your hand
• 9 and 10: Take a look at one card from any opponent’s hand
• Jack: Blindly swap a card from your hand with one of your opponents
• Queen: Swap a card with an opponent after looking at both cards
• Red King: 1 Point

I can give a few bits of advice when playing Cambio that’ll give you a bit of an advantage, or at least they’ve always worked for me.

• Always use the 7’s and 8’s; the more you know, the better.
• Using the 9s and 10s can help you know what the other players are planning.
• The longer the game is, the chances of your opponents beating you increase.
• Keep an eye on the cards the other players are taking from the stockpile.
• Your turn is void if you don’t call “Cambio!” on your last card.

Sticking Cards

There’s an additional rule which some people don’t follow when playing Cambio. Any time a card is placed on the discard pile, you can stick one of your cards to it if it’s of the same value.

You can only stick one card at a time, and you’ve got to do it fast before the next player begins their turn.

You can do this at any point in the game, even if it’s not your turn.

However, if you make a mistake and stick to the wrong card, you must take back your card, plus the penalty card.

1. Blue Cards aka FISH

These cards are the only way you can win the game, you need to prevent them from being killed, be sure to check your deck at the start of the game, after a dead fish, and whenever someone plays a Beaven Buddah (this will make sense by the time you reach the end, I promise. Just remember, you can only play one of these per go.

2. Green Cards, aka Protection

A fish can only be saved with the use of a protection card. But that’s not all. The protection card must have a higher value than the kill card that was used on you, and you’re still not entirely safe because further kill cards can still be used on top of your protection if their value is high enough. In some cases, you might be able to use a WTF card in order to save your fish.

3. Purple Cards, aka WTF

These can be used at any time during the game, and they have many different meanings, which I will go into at the end of this section. Depending on the card you play determines the effect it will have on your opponents.

4. Red Cards, aka KILL

If you play a KILL card, and the value is higher than the fish that has already been played, the fish is dead unless, of course, the fish owner is lucky enough to have a protection card.

WTF Card Effects

As I mentioned, the WTF cards (the purple ones) have many different meanings and effects that can be used to change the direction of the game entirely.

Here’s what they are:

1. Beaver Buddah: Do you remember I mentioned this one? Well, with this card, you end the current fish’s turn immediately. This means any other player is now free to play down a new fish.
2. WTF Tax: With this, the player is able to take one card from any other player of their choosing.
3. Muggen Croc: You can steal two cards from any player.
4. The Elvis Effect: I like this one, as it means you can save a dead fish from the discard pile and add it to your hand.
5. Mrs. Crobits: Take a sneak peek at any other player’s hand.
6. Snappen Snatch: Another good one, which means you can swap your hand with one of the other players (handy if you think they’ve got a better hand than you).
7. Communist Manifesto: Take one card from another player, and give it to someone else. You can’t keep it for yourself.
8. Ben Franklin, Time Traveler: This one kind of does what it says on the cards, time travels, meaning that it can reverse an action made by another player, making it void for the rest of the round.

Additional WTF Rules

There are a couple of extra rules you should be aware of in the WTF card game, for instance:

1. Dead Fish: Where a player is unable to save their fish, the fish gets placed face up, and the loser must announce, “Belly up, my fish is dead!” to the group.
2. Flint Fish: If you find yourself without a fish in your hand at any point, you can call out “Flint Fish” and reveal your cards to your opponents. You can then stick them at the bottom of the discard pile and retrieve seven more.

The End of The Game

As the game draws to an end, there are a couple of things that may happen:

• The stockpile can run dry (run out of cards), in which case the discarded cards are shuffled to reform a new pile. Just leave the fish in play and any kill cards that have been placed on it.
• There might come a point where nobody wishes to play a fish. In this instance, everyone reveals their cards, and the highest-ranking fish takes the turn.

The only to save your fish, and therefore win the game, is by playing down a fish and having nobody able to place down a kill card.

On the other side, if the card on the table is a Jack, chances are, the next card out will be lower.

Of course, this strategy doesn’t always work, and the game can likely throw you a curve ball, but if we’re looking at the chance, you’re best to bet the highest probability.

Also, make sure you keep an eye on the cards that have already been played throughout the game because this can give you an indication of what’s left in the deck, giving you the upper hand. You can keep that tip to yourself if you like.

The end goal here is to outbid your opponent’s Caravan with the highest value of numbered cards without being too light or overburdened.

How to Play Caravan Card Game?

So, as I’ve already mentioned, you will need standard playing cards to play. However, you’ll need two decks.

This is a two-player game, and each player will start with eight cards from each deck.

Now, three cards need to be placed face up in the middle of the table. This is the start of the Caravans.

To begin the first round, you and your opponent will take turns playing cards from your hand onto the Caravans in the center. The goal here is to have each Caravan total 26, or at least as close as possible. However, you must not go over, that’s vital, and you’ll lose instantly if you break this rule.

The cards each have different ranks, and these are as follows:

• Ace = One point
• Number Cards = Face value (e.g, 2= 2 points, 5 = 5 points)
• Face Cards = Ten points

Once you’ve placed a card onto a Caravan, you can now choose whether to add value to the Caravan or take it away.

You can add cards to your opponents’ Caravans if you wish. However, the rules are slightly different if this is the case. If you choose to play a card onto their Caravan, you must play it face down. There are also ways that you can manipulate the Caravans slightly. For instance, I always recommend starting with your high cards, leaving yourself with only low-value ones; this means you’ve got more chance of being able to place down towards the end of the round.

I’m not done yet, because there’s more to consider when playing down your cards to build Caravans.

This revolves around special cards that have unique actions when played, mainly referring to the face cards.

Let’s take a look.

• King: If you play a King onto a Caravan, this doubles the card’s value before it. Therefore, you need to keep a close eye on the game. You could end up tipping yourself past the maximum of 26 points if you’re not careful.
• Queen: Playing down, a Queen reverses the direction. So, if you’ve just played a card up, the next one must be played down.
• Jack: If you play down a Jack, this removes the previous card it’s been played on to, reducing the value of the Caravan.

If you introduce a discard pile, you have more chance of playing a turn. When there’s a discard pile in place, you may withdraw a single card from the stack each time you’re unable to play a card.

4. Reverse Caravan

If you play the game in reverse, it means that instead of trying to reach 26, you aim to have your Caravan as close to zero as possible. This takes a lot more creativity when making your move and adds an exciting twist to the game.

As with most card games, before you even think about the game, you need to pick someone to be the dealer for the group. You can do this however you like, and the dealer can change it before every round to keep things fair.

Now you’ve got that sorted. The dealer should divvy out the chips so that everyone has an equal amount. They’ll also need to shuffle the cards before the person to their left cuts the deck.

The dealer will now place two cards in the middle of the table facing up, and the rest will be the game’s stockpile.

The last thing you need to know before you start is the card ranking, though there’s not much to explain.

Cards are ranked from high to low, with Ace being the highest and two being the lowest.

Rules And Gameplay

So, how do you win these chips, I hear you ask?

Firstly, it’s important to mention that in order to participate in the round, you have to bet at least one chip to the pot at the start of the game. This is the ante and is needed to play the game.

The player sitting to the dealer’s left places the first bet. They can bet as many chips as they like. However, they have to place a minimum of at least one chip. After they’ve done this, the dealer will turn over the top card from the deck and put it In Between the two upturned cards on the table.

Note: When the first two cards are dealt to the table, if they’re consecutive, the player to go first loses automatically, and no third card is even drawn.

The game now moves on to the next player, who takes their turn placing a bet.

The game ends when only one player is holding all the chips.

Handy Tip: Keep an eye on the cards that have been played because this will give you an advantage, knowing what cards are left to be dealt and whether or not it’s worth a bet.

As the game progresses, you will write each person’s score at the end of every round under their name.

The dealer now dishes out ten cards to each player individually. The reaming cards must be placed in the center of the table or playing area, with the top card flipped over for everyone to see. It sets the Trump suit.

Now that you’re ready to start bidding, the player sitting to the dealer’s left takes their turn first.

The player going first bids the number of tricks they think they will win, followed by the next player to the left, and so on.

At the end of the bidding round, the player who has put down the highest trump card wins the trick and takes all the cards played in that round.

The winner of the round goes on to be the first player of the next round.

It carries on until players have no cards left.

Scoring

As each round ends, everyone should write their score on the sheet you created at the start. It depends on the number of tricks you’ve won. So, the player with the most tricks at the end of each round gets a point.

The first player to reach 10 points is the overall winner.

Follow these rules to work out the scores:

1. Ace is the boss, while Two is the lowballer.
2. Trump cards are the secret weapons that help you win the game.
3. If you draw a Trump card, you’re the boss of the trick, even if the other cards are higher.
4. Every time you win a trick, you earn a point. Cha-ching!
5. You earn bonus points if you win the number of tricks you bid. You’re on fire!
6. If you’ve been too ambitious and win more tricks than you bid, you lose points.
